Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is a treatment that chemically exfoliates the skin’s top
layers to reveal the softer and healthier skin below. Chemical peels are
used to treat a variety of skin conditions. This can include
environmentally damaged/hyperpigmented, acne prone, and even sensitive
skin types. In many cases, wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging, and
heredity can be reduced and even eliminated through the use of a series
of chemical peel. Irregular skin pigmentation, sun-damaged skin, and
even precancerous keratoses may improve as a result of chemical peels.
Chemical peels can increase the skins tolerance to external factors and
control acne. The strength of the chemical
peel is determined by the patient’s individual skin type and the degree
of damage to the skin.
This procedure is not effective in the treatment of more severe
wrinkles, sagging and bulging that often require a surgical procedure
such as
a facelift. Types of Peels include:
Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs)Uses:
- Smoothes rough, dry skin
- Improves texture of sun-damaged skin
- Aids in control of acne
- Can be mixed with bleaching agent to correct pigment problems
- Can be used as TCA pre-treatment
Considerations:
- A series of peels may be needed
- As with most peel treatments, sun block is recommended
| Trichloroacetic acid (TCA)
Stronger than glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid helps
smooth the surface of the skin, refine pores and reduce fine
lines through the stimulation of reproductive collagen. This
peel process is a deep skin exfoliation that also helps reduce
acne.
With a TCA peel, healed skin will be able to produce pigment as
always and it will not bleach the skin. However, TCA-peel
patients are advised to avoid the sun exposure for several
months after treatment to protect the newly formed layers of the
skin. Even though TCA is mild it may produce some unintended
color changes in the skin. |

Uses:
- Smoothes out fine surface wrinkles
- Removes superficial blemishes
- Corrects pigment problems
Considerations:
- Can be used on neck or other body areas
- May require pre-treatment with Retin A or AHA creams
- Treatment only takes 5-10 minutes
- Preferred for darker skinned patients
- Peel depth can be adjusted
- Repeat treatment may be needed to maintain results
- Sun block must be used for several months
- Healing is usually quick
